New Report Shines Light on Caregiver Impact

According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s® 2011 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures there are an estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 210,000 living in Illinois alone. By 2025 Illinois will realize a 14% increase in the number of people who have Alzheimer’s disease.

“Those living with the disease are not the only ones affected by it’s devastating affects,” explained Melanie Chavin, vice president of program services for the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Illinois Chapter. “The state of Illinois has nearly 600,000 Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers that provide 659,939,981 hours of unpaid care. In fact, Illinois joins 8 other states with the highest unpaid caregiver contributions in the country at $6 billion or more.

We Need You!...to be an Advocate

Join advocates from across the state on Thursday, April 7 at our State Capital in Springfield for the 2011 Illinois Action Summit.

The day begins with a briefing on a new comprehensive report detailing care giving in Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, and the District of Columbia. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System’s (BRFSS) Care Giving Module included in the 2009 Illinois survey will be shared. Participating will be Erin DeFries Bouldin, author of the report; Illinois’ BRFSS Coordinator, Bruce Steiner; and State Representative Patricia Bellock.

Unforgettable Art: An Affair for Alzheimer’s

If you’re an art enthusiast, a food enthusiast, or just want to have a great night out, come to Unforgettable Art in Rockford on Saturday, April 9. In its eighth year, Unforgettable Art: An Affair for Alzheimer’s is a unique experience because you watch as works of art come alive…all while enjoying spirited conversation, delectable hors d’ oeuvres, specialty cocktails. The evening will culminate in a live auction where guests can try to outbid each other for the artwork created that evening.

Since it began eight years ago, Unforgettable Art has raised more than $290,000 and this year our goal is to raise $75,000.

Chase Away Your Spring Fever

Lace up your running shoes and join us on Saturday, April 16 at the Lombard Commons for the third annual Race to Reverse 5K! Day of registration opens at 6:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 7:35 a.m.

“This is a fun and easy way to start off spring while raising funds to help defeat Alzheimer’s disease,” said Cara Corbett, manager of athletic events for the Chapter. “Registration is open and we encourage runners of all ages and abilities to sign up. The 5K route highlights the beautiful parks and paths of Lombard, Illinois. Anyone who raises more than $100 will receive a Race to Reverse 5K t-shirt!”

Learn from Experts at the Bolingbrook Family Forum

Join us on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Living Water Community Church, 190 Lilly Cache Lane in Bolingbrook for the 2011 Alzheimer’s Association Family Forum.

“We are pleased this year to have two dynamic speakers at our Bolingbrook forum,” said Chris Garnaat, manager of corporate and consumer education outreach for the Greater Illinois Chapter. “Starting out our day will be Dr. Raj Shah who is the Medical Director of the Rush Memory Clinic at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center. Dr. Shah will present on current trends in memory loss research.
