Making Memory Walk a Family Affair

Lenora Dobb’s husband Charlie was only 53 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The year was 1993, Charlie was a manager at the local power plant when he started to notice changes in his everyday life. “We went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota,” recalls Lenora. “At the time they would not diagnose him as having Alzheimer’s disease, they simply said because of his age that he had dementia. We finally received a diagnosis at the hospital in Springfield, Illinois. We were saddened because he had a diagnosis but also relieved that we knew what was happening.”

During the ICAD Conference in Honolulu, the Alzheimer’s Association announced the launch of Alzheimer’s Association TrialMatchTM, a confidential and free tool that provides comprehensive clinical trial information and an individualized trial matching service for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Be on the lookout as the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Ride travels through our service area! Get behind our scientists as they cycle cross-country to encourage increased federal funding for Alzheimer care, support and research. Get in on the action: Click here and sign a petition supporting the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act and other key legislation to make Alzheimer’s a national priority. Or print an offline petition form, take it to your 4th of July gathering to have friends and family members sign it. Then, mail it to your local chapter office. Let’s shift Congress into gear!

This special seminar will feature guest speakers Mary Ellen Geist, an winning journalist and news anchor, is the author of Measure of the Heart: Caring for Parent with Alzheimer’s, Concetta Forchetti, MD, PhD, is the Director of the Memory Disorders Center at the Alexian Brothers Neuroscience Institute, and Jeannine Forrest, PhD, RN, is the Manager of the Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia project at the Alzheimer’s Association - Greater Illinois Chapter. This program is sponsored by Oakton Community College, Sunrise Senior Living, Alexian Brothers and The Tom Detelich Family.
