A Toast to Remember 2010: The French Quarter is calling!

On Thursday, February 18, 2010 the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Illinois Chapter will host the eighth annual A Toast to Remember wine and beer tasting event. This year A Toast to Remember will be held at the breath taking Chicago Cultural Center, located in the heart of downtown Chicago. For those who purchased tickets to the Premier Wine Tasting Lounge doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. doors will open for all attendees.

Family Forums
Join us in Bloomington for a half day event for family, friends and community members supporting someone with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or memory loss. This year the forum will be held on February 18, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Holiday Inn & Suites, 3202 East Empire Street, Bloomington IL, 61704. Disaster Preparedness

Now that winter has arrived, it is important to keep in mind that loved ones with dementia will need extra help in the event of a weather related emergency.

Weather conditions during the winter months in Illinois can range from deep, heavy snow falls to dangerous ice storms and many other extremes. All of these situations can significantly add to stress levels and cause confusion for people with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

NEW Community Education Program Offered

The Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Illinois Chapter will offer the new Know the 10 Signs community education program throughout Illinois. Sessions began in December of 2009 and will continue through July of 2010.

“This program focuses on the 10 warning signs of serious memory problems,” said Melanie Adams, senior program manager. “We start by giving a basic overview of Alzheimer’s disease; next we cover risk factors, diagnosis and the benefits of early detection. The program includes video footage that addresses the fears and myths associated with dementia. Individuals featured in the films include real people who are living with the early stages of dementia, and their families. We encourage everyone to attend this new and exciting program!”

See HBO’s The Alzheimer’s Project

The Alzheimer’s Project,” HBO's four-part documentary series examines groundbreaking Alzheimer discoveries made by the country’s leading scientists and the effects this debilitating and fatal disease has on those with Alzheimer’s and their families.

The Greater Illinois Chapter is hosting showings of these films throughout our Chapter. Find one near you or call your local office to request a screening in your area.


Team CARE becomes ALZ Stars!

Since 2002 Team CARE (Conquering Alzheimer’s Running Endeavor), the Alzheimer's Association – Greater Illinois Chapter’s running team has participated in marathons, half marathons, 5Ks, and our newest event Rundown Alzheimer’s. With your help we’ve achieved great things and raised over over 1 million dollars in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Building on this tremendous success, the time has come to take our program to another level. The Alzheimer's Association is officially going to launch a National Running Team, the ALZ Stars! From this point on, our running program will be the ALZ Stars and this will be reflected in every chapter across the United States!

Calling All Artists for Unforgettable Art 2010

The Alzheimer's Association Greater Illinois Chapter seeks 50 artists for the 7th Annual Unforgettable Art: An affair for Alzheimer's fundraiser, on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Prairie Street Brewhouse in downtown Rockford. 50 blank canvases are set up in a warehouse that is converted to a working studio for a day. Artists create works of art as guests arrive at 6:00 p.m. to watch. The night concludes with a live auction of all artwork. Proceeds of Unforgettable Art are used to support the Alzheimer's Association - Greater Illinois Chapter's many programs and services. Deadline for Artists to register is January 18, 2010.

Rockford Office Moves to Larger Space
We are pleased to announced that due to larger demand for dementia related services in the Greater Rockford area the Greater Illinois Chapter has moved to a much larger location at 1111 South Alpine, Suite 307, Rockford, IL 61108. Currently more than half-a-million Illinoisans are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease; that number will skyrocket as the “Boomers” enter the age of greatest risk for development.
