New Date for Rundown Alzheimer’s

Did you hear? Rundown Alzheimer’s has moved to Tuesday, August 31, 2010! Join us for this great event at U.S. Cellular Field. Rundown Alzheimer’s features a 2-mile fun run/walk complete with a victory lap around the warning track, a post-race concert featuring the Brad Cole Electric and prizes. Taking Steps to End Alzheimer’s at Memory Walk

This fall the Alzheimer’s Association will be taking steps to end Alzheimer’s as we prepare for the 2010 Memory Walks! This year the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will host 15 Memory Walks across our 68 county service area. Our first walk steps off on Saturday, September 11 in Chicago at Lincoln Park.

Care Navigation Services are Now Covered by BC/BS

The Greater Illinois Chapter is pleased to announce that we are now accepting BC/BS for Care Navigation services in our Chicago office, with additional availability within the Joliet office on a limited basis. Care Navigators are licensed social workers who are available to meet with you regarding challenges due to memory loss that you and your loved ones may be facing. Care Navigators assist you with problem solving and creating an individualized plan of care to best address your needs. In addition to BC/BS, the Chapter is also participating providers for Aetna, Cigna and Medicare within the Chicago office, and ECOH within the Rockford office. The Chapter continues to pursue participating status with insurance providers within our regional offices - stay tuned for new details as they arrive!


Free Comfort Care Guide

The Alzheimer’s Association - Greater Illinois Chapter is pleased to offer a free online resource, Encouraging Comfort Care: A Guide for Families of People with Dementia Living in Care Facilities. This 21-page booklet provides useful information to families and staff of long-term care facilities about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, particularly care issues related to the late and final stages.

Alzheimer’s disease does not just affect the person with the disease…it affects families…it affects friendships…it affects many lives. Our new online tribute wall gives you the chance to honor anyone who is affected by the disease. Besides honoring a loved one who has the disease, you can show your appreciation to a caregiver who goes the extra mile; thank a health care professional who assures your care; or a volunteer who selflessly gives their time.

Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Ride

Be on the lookout as the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Ride travels through our service area! Get behind our scientists as they cycle cross-country to encourage increased federal funding for Alzheimer care, support and research. Get in on the action: Click here and sign a petition supporting the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act and other key legislation to make Alzheimer’s a national priority. Or print an offline petition form, take it to your 4th of July gathering to have friends and family members sign it. Then, mail it to your local chapter office. Let’s shift Congress into gear!

Alzheimer advocates champion the needs and rights of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Efforts by advocates can help expand access to community-based care, improve quality care in residential settings and increase funding for research and public programs.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers: Shared Experiences, Valued Connections
Throughout April and May, 2010, caregivers from various areas of Chicagoland attended the Alzheimer’s Association - Greater Illinois Chapter’s spring offering of Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC). PTC is a six-week educational program designed to help family caregivers take care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend.
