We Need You!...to be an Advocate

Join advocates from across the state on Thursday, April 7 at the State Capital in Springfield for the 2011 Illinois Action Summit.

The day begins with a briefing on a new comprehensive report detailing care giving in Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, and the District of Columbia. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System’s (BRFSS) Care Giving Module included in the 2009 Illinois survey will be shared. Participating will be Erin DeFries Bouldin, author of the report; Illinois’ BRFSS Coordinator, Bruce Steiner; and State Representative Patricia Bellock.

As a follow-up to February’s article, Know the 10 Signs, we hope to continue to raise awareness and reiterate the importance of early detection. Fittingly, The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives has dedicated March 14 - 20 as Brain Awareness Week, which gives us additional reason to bring your attention to the importance of screening for brain-related conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and other dementias and drug and alcohol addiction, depression, traumatic injuries to the brain and spinal cord, stroke and other similar conditions.

Learn about memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease from experts in the field of aging, as well as connect with other caregivers and professionals eager to help. The resource fair will provide an excellent opportunity for additional information about products and services available to you.

March is Social Work Appreciation month and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our social workers for all that they do for individuals, families and friends who are facing memory loss.

Our social workers provide information, resources and support to individuals who call the 24/7 Helpline during regular business hours; as well as responding to emails which come in through our e-Helpline; and providing follow up services to individuals who have contacted the Helpline after regular business hours.
