Proteins Found in Spinal Fluid May be an Early Indicator of Alzheimer’s

In a newly published research study, scientists identified a “signature” combination of amyloid and tau of proteins in cerebrospinal fluid that may be characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, and that they also found in most of the people in the study who had mild cognitive impairment, a condition that often precedes Alzheimer’s. They also found it in nearly 40 percent of cognitively normal people in the study. This supports the idea that we may in the future be able to detect brain changes related to Alzheimer’s before we see outward symptoms, taking us a step closer to early detection and treatment. This article provides support for the current effort to revise the Alzheimer’s disease diagnostic criteria that is being driven by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Alzheimer’s Association.
